Healthier Working Environments with Air Filtration Units

Healthier Working Environments with Air Filtration Units

Air filtration systems in general are used to remove particles from the air like dust, bacteria and fumes in households and places of work.

There are many factors that can contribute to maintaining a healthy working environment. One of the most important elements is having a clean and effective air flow which can be controlled by installing an air filtration system.

By improving the quality of air via the use of air filtration units, staff absenteeism can also be reduced and therefore help to increase productivity. Air filtration systems can also make a work space more comfortable by ensuring that it is not too neither hot nor too cold.

Fume filtration and dust filtration units can also be used in various industrial areas to help keep dangerous fumes in the air from harming employees.

These larger types of air filtration equipment are mostly found in workshops where employees come into contact with dangerous chemicals everyday and therefore need to be monitored.

The types of dust and fumes that are involved when it comes to the engineering industry include gases caused from welding, degreasing and stripping fluids, lubricants, paints and adhesives. One should also be careful when working with wood as the dust, especially from the Western Red Cedar which can be particularly harmful to asthma suffers.

Air filtration cabinets on the other hand are useful to environments where external venting is not an option. The cabinet works by capturing and filtering the air and is quiet and easy to work. You can simply place it onto a desk or any other open surface and switch on. These units are ideal for dental and pharmaceutical laboratories as well as in office environments. Mist filtration equipment can help solve the problem of the overspray of particles which are often a hazard to salons and mobile therapists.

There are a number of household, commercial industrial air filtration systems available to help guarantee the protection of individuals who are placed under the above and other similar risky conditions daily. Just remember that no matter which system your business requires, it will have to abide by the necessary health and safety regulations.

Widespread Solutions is a UK manufacturer of such air filtration equipment. All of their products abide by the required health and safety regulations and are COSSH compliant. Visit their website for more information on their products and services.

Office Environment and Health Risks to Staff

Office Environment and Health Risks to Staff

You would think that people who work in offices are in a relatively safe environment. But did you know that office workers are more exposed to health risks which might not be found elsewhere?

Work Stations
Repetitive strain injury is quite common in employees using keyboards. Correct positioning of the hands when using a keyboard will help, and also an RSI mouse which supports the users forearm will help lessen muscular aches and pains. Use a good computer chair which encourages a straight sitting position as opposed to sitting hunched up over your desk. This will help to alleviate back pain.

It has also been suggested that ‘office smog’ caused by computers and printers can generate pollutants and bacteria from the internal fans inside computers causing headaches and respiratory problems.

Laser Printers
It is a well known fact that toner cartridges used in laser printers contain carcinogens. These are emitted into the atmosphere when the printer is in use. These particles can cause problems in breathing and other ailments. Emissions are higher when printing images which require the use of more toner. If you are using a printer make sure that you are in a well ventilated area.

Lighting
Ensure your computer screen is not in a direct light source, either from natural light or office lighting.  Glare from the screen can cause eye strain and headaches. Also, concentrated staring at a screen for hours on end will dry your eyes out. This is not good, especially if you wear contact lenses. Take a five minute break every hour, and refresh your lenses with any solutions that you may use. If your main job is with computer screens you may qualify for computer glasses. These are special glasses that are obtainable through your normal optician, and which your company will pay for. It is your employers responsibility to provide you with the necessary equipment, health and safety wise, to enable you to do your job.

Ventilation
Employers should ensure that air ventilation around the office block is flowing freely.  If the air system is not working properly you may dry air can cause breathing problems, particularly for those who are prone to asthma attacks.

A workable ambient temperature in an office during summer should be between 65 and 72 degrees, and between 73 and 78 degrees in colder months. These temperatures are deemed to be comfortable working conditions. A fresh air supply is essential for maintaining good ventilation, which is also of course necessary to prevent computers from overheating especially in hot weather.

It is to the employers advantage to ensure that the office working environment and equipment clean, acceptable, and safe to work in meeting the standards of the Health and Safety Executive.

Poor working conditions cause to days lost through sick leave and, therefore, loss of productivity.

Our Awareness and Responsibility For Environment

Our Awareness and Responsibility For Environment

We need to be friendly neighbors of  the nature or make it our close citizens of the world to live harmoniously.

Not only should we recognize the results of  what we do, but also be responsible for them.

Our world has become a very small place – in social, political and environmental terms – with incidents and developments in one sector of the world rapidly affecting the entire planet. The amazing Internet has transformed our communications into seconds. A decision taken by our world leaders can cause turbulence in the world and affect the lives of ordinary citizens like us. A generous donation from wealthy countries can help improve the conditions of natural calamity victims or starving children somewhere in Africa or third world countries.

This century is a trying time of unprecedented challenges and changes. Not only for our world leaders but for us ordinary people. We have seen and experienced vast changes in the global economic system. Yet some who live in wealthy countries are only vaguely aware of these changes. How many of us realize, for example, that the economic crisis in some countries has more than doubled the number of people in those countries living in poverty? As a result, we hear of children who are malnourished and will grow up with health problems, with pathetic conditions.

The primary responsibility for these developments lies with our world leaders, in particular, the governments of the world’s wealthy nations. It is these governments that set the rules and laws for global trade through institutions, among other things.

If we vote for these politicians or government leaders who are responsible for the deterioration of the global environment, we are as much responsible. We also share responsibility for the worsening economic situation of millions of people. The fact that we may be ignorant or know little about global economics does not exonerate us of responsibility.

The media, influding the Internet, bring us the news, our primary sources of information. The reality is that the mainstream of this information may present limited views of what is actually happening in the world. And how about the half-truths, sensationalized and biased reporting we have to contend with. We don’t have to believe or accept every news to be true.

Yet it’s the same media that also play a vital role in precipitating positive change. For instance, a Daily News with a wide circulation can expose a corruption and crime by running a serialised story or follow up a lead about a significant event. Such stories, once taken seriously and formally investigated, can produce productive results for the community or the world in general. One specific event I have in mind was the international media exposure of the pre-1994 South African government’s injustices that helped bring down the apartheid regime. The rest is history. Even when demonstrators take to the streets they do so in part with the purpose of making their demands gain publicity, thereby putting pressure on government leaders, politicians, as well as corporate decision-makers.

We don’t need to be passive consumers of news either. A variety of information channels exists including magazines published by social-justice oriented organisations. Some books and articles with well-known commentators have exposed realities beneath the gloss of political and/or corporate propaganda. Sections I always take into account are the ‘letters to the editor’ and ‘opinion’ pages of newspapers, magazines and Internet Websites that alert us to issues, relevant or trivial. Some local government leaders schedule a meaningful discussion with their constituency. We can also listen to talks by visiting speakers or visit our Civic Community office for announcements.

Being aware of our environmental activities, at the same time taking responsibility for our actions, could have a far-reaching effect starting from our own backyard to our global system.
